First Day at School

Today was Lucy's first day at school, along with around 70 other youngsters. Loaded with her new schoolbag, armed with her traditional Schultüte - a large, colourfully decorated cardboard cone full of goodies - and dressed in a pretty pink and blue dirndl, she joined the other kids of Class 1C.

Lucy had been so upbeat about her first school day that it was a surprise to see her burst into tears on entering the school. Sat on the bench at the welcome assembly, she again became quite upset and only when seeing that she had a nice teacher, Frau Zimmermann, did she start to feel more at ease. It was quite heart-wrenching for Mike and me.

The first lesson lasted only about an hour (mummies and daddies were plied with alcohol during this time), such that we were already on our way home at 10.30. Lucy proudly announced she had homework to do, but didn't let it distract her from first emptying her Schultüte and scoffing as many sweets as she could before lunch at the pub with friends.

A few neighbours have been round to wish Lucy a fun time at school, which starts in earnest tomorrow at 8 am.
