Sledging, skating and skiing

If you have ever wondered why I called this blog 'Across the Miles', here's the answer: Many years ago when I was writing regularly to a Canadian penpal, she sent me a Christmas card that said something like 'wishing you a merry Christmas across the miles.' This year, we received a card with a similar message on it from Kathy, Richard and family, and I was pleased to see that Mr Metric hasn't managed to spoil that yet by making us write 'Across the kilometres'!

Father Christmas brought us .... lots of snow! So we thought we had better make the most of it. Skating is my favourite, skiing is what Mike likes and, so long as someone else drags the sledge up the hill, sledging is what Lucy enjoys most.

We've just helped Lucy to write her thank-you letters and Mike has gone out for a jog and will post them on his way round the block. It hasn't been cold enough yet for the local pond to freeze over, but it's otherwise very wintery here. The day before yesterday when I was driving Mike's car, it nearly slithered into a car in front (despite me braking), but that car fortunately moved off just in time. Lucy told Mike he'd better drive on the way home because he could do it better :-)

We'll be spending New Year's Eve at the Pages' tomorrow. We've got a few fireworks, but nothing over-the-top. We know that the mobile phone networks will be deadlocked around midnight tomorrow, so to anyone reading this: Happy New Year!
