A holiday in the Allgäu

Revisiting the Aggenstein

Castle ruins
Pleasant perspectives
We spent a portion of the autumn half-term holiday in the Allgäu region, one and a half hours southwest of Munich. We had read of a dog-friendly hotel with good spa facilities, so we booked three nights there. The food was excellent - until the third evening; when we only got three courses, we realized that the five courses of the previous evenings had been because those two days had been public holidays!
Our location was where the first range of mountains rises up from the Allgäuer lake district. As you approached the area in the car, you got good views of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Our outings during our stay were a combination of flat lakeside strolls and mountain hikes. During our hike up the Aggenstein and back, Belka managed to disturb all the other hikers on the mountain with her wailing and barking, because she was able to sniff out chamois who were many, many metres away.
The first snows of winter had already arrived higher up, while it was still green in the lowlands. The area also has several impressive medieval castles in various states of ruin, which we thoroughly enjoyed exploring.
