We've just had a very relaxing weekend. It began with a Christmas lunch in a rustic Bavarian restaurant with a big bunch of British friends (most of whom have now also got German citizenship).
On Sunday I got my birthday wish: a meal cooked by Mike and Lucy. They chose to do a full English breakfast, washed down with sparkling wine. Yum. In the afternoon, they bought a Christmas tree, so we spent the rest of the afternoon decorating it and putting up the Christmas cards.
Today Mike had a day off work. I'd asked to go to Bad Tölz to the Christmas market there. I don't remember ever seeing the centre of Bad Tölz, which is a very attractive town on the Isar. The buildings right in the centre are painted various pastel shades and have religious murals on their walls. High above the town is Calvary Hill, with larger-than-life crucifixion figures cast in bronze. From that vantage point you can see the Alps, and the Isar wending its way towards Munich.
Temperatures here are unseasonally high this week, though only for a few hours between late morning and early afternoon. The mountain tops, however, are nicely dusted with snow.
