Oh did we have a lovely holiday. We went from the sandstone towers of the Sächsische Schweiz and the beauty of Dresden to the lakes of Mecklenburg Vorpommern, on to the island of Rügen in the far north, over and down to the medieval town of Rinteln near Hanover, then via Wuppertal - with its landmark hanging railway - back to Krailling.

"...And how was the weather?" our friends asked. Well, our mini-tour of Germany was rather a wet one. When you're spending 10 nights in a tent, it can be a bit uncomfortable in the rain, especially when it gets chilly and your sleeping bag isn't warm enough. Poor Lucy. We had to sleep three on a mattress on a couple of occasions because she was so cold. But I had my knitting, Mike had his newspaper, and Lucy had her smartphone, so we had enough entertainment when we weren't out exploring the wonders of eastern Germany.

We did, of course, have some lovely sunny days, too. When we visited British sculptor Tony Cragg's sculpture park in Wuppertal, it was a beautiful day. We not only got to admire the enormous statues in this amazing forested park, but we caught a glimpse of the man himself while he was directing the installation of a new sculpture in his grounds.

Animals played an important role during our holiday. The fields, beaches and forests provided us with plenty of creatures to observe. The funniest of them were a neighbouring farmer's 28 Indian running ducks that charge up and down Holly (a retired colleague of Mike's) and Jürgen's expansive garden twice a day, chomping up every single slug that they can find. What an amusing sight (and what a great, free service Holly and Jürgen enjoy)!

All in all it was a great holiday.
